Kevin U. Stephens, Sr.
Unity Day Human Service Commissioner

Dr. Kevin U. Stephens is currently serving as Health Director for the City of New Orleans.  He is responsible for six divisions, thirty programs and many grants.  The programs include operation of three clinics, nutritional services, immunization services, HIV/AIDS prevention and care, lead poisoning prevention and Emergency Medical Services. His accomplishments include leading healthcare in the City of New Orleans thru the most destructive man made and natural disasters and building a public health infrastructure from ground zero.  


Kevin U. Stephens, is a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist who was in private practice in New Orleans East for over 14 years.  His has previously served as the Women’s Health Medical Director for the Office of Public Health in the Department of Health and Hospitals for the State of Louisiana.  Additionally, he is presently serving on the NIEHS and Childhood Lead Poison Prevention Advisory Committees.


Dr. Stephens is a member of the Bar in Louisiana and has worked with as a consultant to many local, state and federal agencies and organizations. He has given many lectures across the country and is committed to community education about medical issues.  He has published many articles and appeared on many local, national and international media programs.  Examples would include, CNN, BBC, Oprah’s Winfrey, Dr. Phil, and a weekly health show on the local CBS affiliate. 


Dr. Stephens is a native of Gonzales, Louisiana and holds a B.S. in Physics from Southern University, M.D. from LSU Medical School, and a residency in Ob/Gyn from Tulane University.  He also has a J.D. from Loyola.  He is married to 

Dr. Cheryll Bowers-Stephens, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, and they have 3 children.
